Joe Kennedy Going To Enjoy Being an Old Dad
So fun to get to write about being an old dad – and to use my name in the 3rd person … I was going to write about popular daddy blogs today, but feel like I want to get this topic started – as there could be some interest in the topic. What’s it going to be like being an old dad?
Before my first daughter Jacqueline was conceived, I was about 40 years old and pretty sure that I would never have children. Then I met her mom and it turned out we both wanted a family. It didn’t take much longer for Jackie Kennedy to come along. In my early 40s, at that point, I was already what many would consider an old dad.
Now almost 13 years later, I’m remarried and Stacia Kennedy is pregnant with Ava Kalea Kennedy. Since before we got married last October, Stacia and I had been talking about having a ‘Monkey Baby’ or baby in the Chinese Year of the Monkey. We had A LOT of fun practicing! Since shortly after we met our sex life has been extremely awesome (at least from my point of view) and a big part of our lives. Trying to make a baby was, well, er, different. I was reminded of how difficult it can be to do something that you’ve consciously tried not to do for so long …
Add that stress to the uncertainty around the condition of my ammo – at 53 years old, what man could be sure he was still shooting live bullets? We did have fun practicing, but when it is all said and done, sex was much more fun after the mission to plant the seed was accomplished. OK … but I digress and get off track.
It’s about 50 days or so until Ava is supposed to be born. I’m extremely excited and cannot wait (although I can and will – and still would like to see her born on 9/16 at Kaboo Del Mar). Tomorrow we get to see her again (via ultrasound).
I have to admit, I’m more than a little apprehensive about being an old dad. I want to stay healthy and alive for all my children – as well as for Stacia. I want to be there for all of them. We have a lot of good times in front of us and I want to be able to fully live, experience and participate. Nobody knows how long they have in this life. I’ve had several friends my age already pass before their time. Many more have suffered with health issues and had their quality of life diminished. A new child on the way reminds me – that I still have A LOT to do and that I need to take massive action to create the amazing results I want and expect from myself.
