Jessica Wood is Not Getting Married, But Stacia and I Just Did …

I’ve recently come across a great site and podcast called Variety Seekers at and on Facebook at Hone Life.  It is produced by Alex and Jessica Wood, who are brother and sister.  They are definitely lifestyle designers and proponents of following your passions.

Jessica recently wrote a post titled “Why I’m Not Married“, which has apparently caused some controversy.  It’s a short and introspect post, which examines choices that couples get to make – and expectations others have of couples …

She makes some great points and the post was particular interesting to me since Stacia Kennedy and I were married on the beach in Hawaii earlier this month.

While Jessica has some very good reasons on why she is not married, Stacia and I have even better reasons on why we did get married.  When first got together over 4 years ago, it was because we have a lot in common.  We are both very much into personal development, social media and are wanting a life much different that what society seems to expect.  We are working on designing our awesome lifestyle and making good progress.

Having been married a couple of times before (and being 19 years older than Stacia), getting married was not particularly important to me – EXCEPT that it was important to Stacia – making it important to me.

Although we have not been able to spend much time together in the time that we’ve been married, we are totally committed to each other and our marriage.  Although we have common goals, we each also have our our personal goals – and we support each other in achieving these goals.

We each have an awesome child from previous relationships, but are also planning on having a Monkey Baby (not a real monkey, but a human in the Year of the Monkey) and are looking forward to getting busy on that as soon as we can get some reasonably priced health care (although that might be a pipe dream as long as Obamacare exists).  We want to ‘home school’ our monkey baby, while traveling the world, living a laptop lifestyle (and skiing our asses off).

Marriage is definitely not for everyone, and not yet for Jessica – and that’s great.  On the other hand, marriage IS for some lifestyle designers like Stacia and myself and we look forward to continuing to design our awesome lifestyles.

DISH in Trouble? TEGNA Blacks Out DISH Customers in 38 Markets

Despite DISH’s offer to extend contract negotiations, TEGNA Inc. (formerly Gannett Co., Inc.) has recently blacked out DISH customers’ access to its local channels in 38 markets across 33 states and the District of Columbia. The media conglomerate has used the move to gain deal leverage as it seeks above-market rate increases double the current DISH rate.

DISH Network L.L.C. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ: DISH).
“With DISH willing to grant an extension and a retroactive true-up on rates, TEGNA had nothing to lose and consumers had everything to gain by leaving the channels up,” said Warren Schlichting, DISH senior vice president of programming. “Instead, TEGNA chose to turn its back on its public interest obligations and use innocent consumers as bargaining chips.”
DISH and TEGNA had been making steady progress in their recent negotiations, and DISH was hopeful that they would come to a mutual agreement to renew carriage of the TEGNA local stations. In that spirit, DISH offered a short-term contract extension to TEGNA that would include a retroactive true-up when new rates were agreed upon, and would preserve the ability of DISH customers to access the TEGNA local stations while negotiations continued. The true-up would ensure that TEGNA was made whole at the new rates for the period of any contract extension.
“We are actively working to negotiate an agreement that promptly returns this content to DISH’s programming lineup,” added Schlichting.
Need for Retransmission Consent Reform
“TEGNA’s decision to cut ties with DISH customers is a prime example of why Washington needs to stand up for consumers and end local channel blackouts,” said R. Stanton Dodge, DISH executive vice president and general counsel. “Broadcasters like TEGNA use their in-market monopoly power to put profits ahead of the public interests they are supposed to serve.”
Broadcasters currently prevent pay-TV companies from temporarily substituting an out-of-market station during a local broadcaster blackout. This leaves consumers in the dark and leaves pay-TV companies powerless to serve their customers.
Dodge continued: “Actions like these are precisely the reason that Congress has mandated, and the FCC has started, a formal process to investigate negotiating tactics that use innocent consumers as bargaining chips.”

Along with other pay-TV companies and public interest groups that form the American Television Alliance (ATVA), DISH has asked the FCC to consider these and other tactics as violating “good faith” negotiations.

Rising Retransmission Rates
Each year, the cost to carry local broadcast stations rises far beyond the rate of inflation, leading to blackouts across the country that affect millions of subscribers of various pay-TV companies. According to SNL Kagan, a leading source on the media industry, broadcast fees burdening pay-TV consumers were as low as $215 million in 2006, soared to $4.9 billion in 2014, and are expected to more than double to reach $10.3 billion in 2021.

Sleep Country Changes Name to Sleep Train

Sleep Country USA, the Northwest’s largest mattress retailer,recently announced that it will join its West-Coast sister brand under the Sleep Train banner in Washington State. Continued growth, improved internet presence, new opportunities for employees, and the expansion of their award-winning Foster Kids program are cited as key factors in the decision to combine the brands under one Sleep Train name.

“For many years, we’ve been operating side-by-side with the same services, same selection, same guarantees, and same commitment to our community through the Foster Kids Program, and now we are unifying the companies under one banner name, Sleep Train,” said Gina Davis, Vice President of Branding at Sleep Country. Fish Tale Beyond the Pale Ale Named World’s Best Beer

Fish Tale Ale’s Beyond the Pale Ale, produced by Fish Brewing Co in Olympia, WA was named the 2015 World’s Best Beer by the World Beer Awards. To receive this award, the beer was first judged in a regional style heat in America. Winners from all regions including Asia and Europe were then tasted against each other to select the World’s Best Style. From these world winners, the World’s Best Categories beers were selected, from which the World’s Best Beer is selected.

With over 1,000 beers from more than 30 countries entered into this year’s competition to come out on top is quite an achievement and honor.  Judges blind tasted and scored the entries over four rounds of judging. The National Grape & Wine Initiative today announced award of $6 million in federal funding for research to develop and apply technology that will transform the way grapes are grown in the U.S.
The five-year project will be led by Dr. Terry Bates of Cornell University and Dr. Stephen Nuske of Carnegie Mellon University and focus on technology

that creates digital maps and analytical software tools allowing farmers to focus on variance and conditions in specific management zones in vineyards, according to Jean-Mari Peltier, president of NGWI. 

“This project will build on an industry funded pilot project that developed tools for precision vineyard management,” Peltier said. “Together, we believe this will lead to commercialization of technology for farmers who grow wine, juice, raisin and table grapes.”
Using novel and off-the-shelf sensor technologies, the industry pilot project resulted in digital management maps of soil, canopy and crop.  A new prototype crop estimation tool can be attached to common vineyard equipment and take thousands of images per minute providing a more accurate view of grape clusters.  
“It is impossible to overstate the value of this technology,” said Peltier. “It could result in a 50 percent improvement in predicting crop yield.”
The combined data could provide information including crop yield, soil conditions, irrigation and fertilization needs; canopy growth and color and maturity of grapes.  Digital mapping can help farmers balance quality and quantity of a crop; manage and direct harvesting operations; and help pinpoint varying soil conditions and needs throughout vineyards.
Funding is from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture’s (NIFA) Specialty Crop Research Initiative (SCRI) and includes experts from California State University at Fresno, the University of California at Davis, and Newcastle University in England.
“This project exemplifies what the specialty crop industry has been looking for from SCRI,” said John Aguirre, President of the California Association of Winegrape Growers, and Chairman of the NGWI Board. “Because of grower involvement, the project reflects an industry-driven research agenda to ensure the outcome will be relevant and valuable to the nation’s grape growers and ultimately American consumers.”
An industry advisory panel has been identified to provide input and guidance during the project that includes Dr. Russ Smithyman of Ste Michelle Wine Estates in Washington State.
Aguirre pointed out that NGWI worked exhaustively with government officials to create a two-step review process for SCRI that allows industry to reviews proposals for relevance and impact, followed by a scientific peer review. The unique approach allows that most important, scientifically valid projects are funded. 
Aguirre said, “We believe this is a model for other competitive grants administered by NIFA.”

Gov. Inslee urges participation in Great Washington ShakeOut

 In a bid to highlight preparedness in the face of potential earthquakes and storms, Gov. Jay Inslee proclaimed October as Washington State Disaster Preparedness Month and NOAA Weather Radio Awareness Month.
The highlight of the month is the Great Washington ShakeOut “drop, cover and hold” earthquake drill

at 10:15 a.m., on Oct. 15. The drill emphasizes the urgent need for people, organizations, schools, communities and businesses to practice what to do to be safe and to be ready before an earthquake strikes. In addition, most coastal communities will test their tsunami alert sirens at the same date and time using the real sound of the siren, not the Westminster Chimes that typically happen during the monthly tests. NOAA weather radios set to receive the required monthly test will also activate during this test.

“Our state faces a real danger from earthquakes, but one of the easiest ways to get ready is by simply practicing your emergency preparedness skills and participating in the Great Washington ShakeOut,” Inslee said. “I urge our residents to drop, cover and hold on – and then do one more thing to make sure your emergency kits are up to date, that your business has a continuity plan or just to make sure you know how you’d care for your pet in a crisis.”
People and organizations can sign up to participate at As of Oct. 8, with one week to go, more than 970,000 have registered. Last year, more than 1 million residents registered.
Preparedness will be key in surviving the next big earthquake to hit the Pacific Northwest. That means families need to have at least three days’ worth of supplies and an emergency “go” kit ready and, for those living on the coast, have an understanding of evacuation routes and the warning signs behind tsunamis – including how NOAA Weather Radio works and the coastal sirens.
The Washington Military Department has been leading a joint planning team to develop a state Earthquake Response Plan which it continues to test, refine and improve. The plan will be tested next summer during a multiple-day earthquake training scenario called Cascadia Rising involving multiple states and partners from across the region.
The governor also proclaimed October as National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio month. The governor’s proclamation notes NOAA Weather Radio provides emergency alerts about approaching hazards, and gives residents and businesses the critical lead time necessary to prepare and to take the appropriate public safety actions before, during and after a disaster. 
In addition, the governor notes a related emergency preparedness campaign called Take Winter By Storm, also kicks off in October.  It highlights preparedness specifically for winter storms.
This is the fourth year for Washington State to participate in the Great ShakeOut initiative.  From noon to 2 p.m., on Oct. 15, Washington state earthquake preparedness experts will gather online for a Reddit Ask Me Anything – an online Q&A.
We also encourage participants to take photos of themselves participating in the drill and post those photos to social media using the hashtag #washakeout.

About Osvaldo Alonso
In 2014, Alonso started in 33 of 34 MLS regular season games with the Sounders FC, including a club-record 150th career appearance against New England (May 11). Atigeo Names Alejandro Cabrera Chief Marketing Officer
