Another section of cliff between the train tracks and the Pacific Ocean has collapsed into the sea. It slowed down train service throughout the morning (we noticed that as the trains passed much more slowly through Del Mar) and took out a portion of a trail used by surfers to get to the beach.
This is at least the 4th partial collapse in recent months. One has to wonder how much longer the Amtrack and Coaster trains will be able to operate safely on the same tracks …
The following is an email I sent to Del Mar City Manager Scott Huth on September 7, 2018:
Hi Scott – I hope all is well.
This morning on her 2nd birthday, I was walking my daughter down to the tot lot by the beach.
We stopped to check our mail at the post office and then continued down 15th toward Coast Blvd. I started smelling noxious chemicals – and then noticed one of the landscapers working on the corner (I assume it is City property) was spraying weed killer. Before we were overcome with it, I turned around went back up the block and crossed the street.
I have a few questions for you:
1. Were these workers there on a City contract? 2. Does the City know they are using chemical weed killers and spraying them in public without notice or regard to the environment? 3. Is the City of Del Mar ok with this? 4. Is anyone thinking about where those chemicals end up? Gutters, drains, sewers, beach and ocean ….
And most importantly,
5) What can be done to ensure that my daughter is never exposed to dangerous chemicals like in Del Mar again?

Care2 petition is calling on the California Horse Racing Board to shut down racing at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club after racing horse Irish Spring died from injuries sustained from a fall during a race over the weekend. Two weeks prior a second horse died after going into cardiac arrest while training. The Care2 petition has gathered 18,000 signatures since launch.
Care2 Petition To Shut Down Del Mar Thoroughbred Club
“These horses are pushed to and beyond their physical limits, all for sport,” states the Care2 petition. “Not only that, but a lot of people are making a great deal of money off the backs of horses like Irish Spring. They are beat to go faster and harder than they should.”
According to horsefund.org, “Numbers from the Jockey Club equine injury database covering a one-year period show that one of every 500 Thoroughbred starts at North American racetracks results in a fatal injury. This represents about 800 deaths. Reporting is voluntary with 85% of race tracks participating.” Continue reading “Care2 Petition To Shut Down Del Mar Thoroughbred Club”

According to a post at SanDiegoRealEstate.re, Del Mar – based Cazador Investments, LLC has closed on five separate acquisitions across San Diego County in the last nine months, totaling 44 multifamily units and 4 commercial spaces in several desirable submarkets. Hunter Beaumont, President of Cazador, comments, “These acquisitions were each situational opportunities where we could get into strong value-add candidates in attractive areas and at a great basis. Discount to replacement cost is one of our most important metrics, and these assets were all acquired at a substantial discount to what it would cost to build them today.”
