Meydenbauer Center, a full-service convention center and theatre located in the heart of the greater Seattle tech scene in Bellevue, Washington, is celebrating its 25th anniversary by looking back at what has changed since its beginnings in 1993.

The highlights of Meydenbauer’s contributions to the city of Bellevue—in response to the growing need to have a central meeting place for business and social activities year-round—are plentiful. For example, since 1993:
· Bellevue’s population grew 59%, from 89,710 to 142,000, while the economic impact of the convention center grew by 365%, to $58 million annually.
· Bellevue’s downtown employment more than doubled, to over 50,000, as new office towers opened and many companies opened offices in the downtown core, utilizing the convention center for meeting space.
· The convention center provided a venue for fundraising organizations to grow. Funds raised at Meydenbauer Center have increased from $2.4 million in 1998 to over $9.1 million today, a 379% increase.
· The makeup of the city moved from majority white to majority minority, and the convention center kept pace, with a mosaic of cultural offerings, a diverse workforce and increasingly sophisticated food.

Thompson plans to put the 50 drummers in the parade itself, allowing them to perform “up close and personal” with the crowds on the sidewalks and will alternate the 50 dancing Jingle Belles with the 42 Snow Flurries Color Guard down the center of NE 8th St. giving them plenty of room to ring in the holidays.

BETTY BOWEN AWARD ‘S FINALISTS

The Seattle Art Museum (SAM) and the Betty Bowen Committee, chaired by Gary Glant, announced today the five artists selected as finalists for this year’s Betty Bowen Award: Natalie Ball, Amy Bernstein, Bruce Burris, Deborah Lawrence, and George Rodriguez. The juried award honors a Northwest artist for their original, exceptional, and compelling work. The award was founded in 1977 to honor the legacy of Betty Bowen (1918–1977), who was an avid champion of artists in the Pacific Northwest. Founded by Bowen’s friends, the award is administered by SAM.

The Betty Bowen Committee—comprising Northwest curators, collectors, and artists—reviewed 461 applications from visual artists residing in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. One of this year’s finalists will receive an unrestricted cash award in the amount of $15,000 and will have their work displayed at the Seattle Art Museum. At the discretion of the committee, up to two Special Recognition Awards of $2,500 may be granted.

Last year’s winner was Jono Vaughan, whose work memorializes transgender individuals whose lives were cut short by violence. Her solo exhibition (April 21–August 5, 2018) featured her ongoing series Project 42, in which she creates handmade garments that are then worn in collaborative public performances.

The winner of the 40th Annual Betty Bowen Award will be announced in September 2018. The award will be formally presented in a free and open to the public celebration at the Seattle Art Museum on November 8, 2018. The winner’s solo exhibition will be on view at SAM in spring 2019.

Natalie Ball was born and raised in Portland, Oregon, but has since relocated to her ancestral homelands of Chiloquin. As a multidisciplinary artist, Ball positions her work as a reorientation of conversations that shape Native American identities. Through figurative sculpture and assemblage, Ball makes installations that deconstruct dominant narratives to create new texts, new histories, and new manifestations that add to the discussion of a complex racial narrative.

Amy Bernstein – Portland, OR

Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Amy Bernstein is an artist and writer living and working in Portland, Oregon. Bernstein’s abstract paintings encourage the viewer to reposition themselves in relation to who they are, what they see, and where the body exists in time and space. The works vacillate between the histories of philosophies, art, and design, searching for the space in which we will discover new vision and thus new thinking.

Bruce Burris – Corvallis, OR

Bruce Burris has worked at the intersection of art and cultural equity for marginalized groups for over 35 years. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, Burris has served as founder, director, or owner of a number of agencies and programs in Kentucky and Oregon noted for creating innovative supports that enable people to assume roles of significance in their communities. Burris’ current work of collage and found objects stems from observations of class and philosophical divides between those who are proponents of dying industries, including coal and logging, and those who are adamant that these industries must adapt.

Deborah Lawrence – Seattle, WA

Deborah Faye Lawrence uses the medium of collage to analyze, categorize, and make meaning. She boldly reports and comments on social, historical, and current events through the process of cutting, manipulating, and composing found information. Her appropriation and re-contextualization of found images, including maps and flags, points to a tradition of politically engaged collage, while satirically and incisively addressing contemporary concerns.

George Rodriguez – Seattle, WA

George Rodriguez was born in El Paso, Texas and currently lives and works in Seattle. As a sculptor, his large-scale ceramics are a celebration of the individual against the backdrop of community and the modern world against the backdrop of the ancient. Through the creation of guardian figures, tomb sculptures, and shrines, Rodriguez depicts his community current and forthcoming. His most recent works explore themes of protection, inclusion, and sanctity using the Chinese Zodiac as framework.

The growing availability and improved technology of ebikes is reflected in the current demand. According to a late 2017 report by the NPD Group, ebike sales have nearly tripled since 2014. The world record ride is a celebration of the growing ebike market as part of the broader bicycling community.

The free event consists of a light two-mile parade around Seattle’s Magnuson Park in an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for most ebikes on a ride. Also on site will be a free ebike expo with vendors showcasing a variety of new ebike products and accessories.

Riders who own or have access to an ebike are encouraged to ride them to the event; interested bicyclists who do not have access to an ebike will be able to borrow one while supplies last, courtesy of LimeBike. Registration for the event is free and also includes a commemorative t-shirt.

Cascade Bicycle Club Executive Director Richard Smith said, “Ebike popularity is exploding throughout our region. People who wouldn’t have considered riding a traditional bike are taking to ebikes to help them overcome potential obstacles like physical limitations, distance and hills.” Smith continued, “the innovative technology of ebikes is helping more people discover the joys of bicycling.”

For one former stuntman, he didn’t sit idly by and wish for a position he would be passionate about. “I had to realize that being a stuntman wasn’t a long-term career. It was too hard on my body,” says David Ankin, inventor and star of the hit show ToyMakerz. “I decided to turn my passion into a career that I could grow in and others could also enjoy. Creativity is something that helped me get started in this field and remains a constant. Now the challenge is constantly coming up with something new and unique.”

Ingenuity, which is having the ability to be clever, original, or inventive, is what has propelled Ankin to the top of his field. But it’s not something that came to him overnight. In fact, he has been on the path since he was a child. Growing up without a lot of money, he wasn’t able to go out and buy the latest toy or car. But he also didn’t want his vehicles to look just like everyone else’s. That motivated him to learn to build his own. With his father as his inspiration, he hung out at his shop and watched in awe at the things that his dad could do.

As a child, Ankin also spent a lot of time being dedicated to bike and car shows. In fact, his idea of a vacation was working late into the night for six weeks to get ready for a bike or car show, then traveling halfway across the country and meeting up with other fabricators. When he wasn’t doing that, he was struggling to get his car or bike ready to win a race. At the end of the day, the factors that really influenced him on his journey are the industry itself and all the people and fabricators who no one will ever meet.

Today, his ingenuity has led to his company, ToyMakerz, where the toys are made, and has also been turned into a hit television show, where people can tune in and see him work his magic. Here are 5 ways that ingenuity can help fuel your business:
