Robert Scoble Wants to Be Your Friend – Reaching Out to the Social Media All-Stars

Just about an hour ago, I was thinking about reaching out to Robert Scoble, who is a true star of social media and one of the first people to get me interested in blogging (which was perhaps the first ‘social media’ tool available) at the Blog Business  Summit held in Seattle in 2006.  I wanted to ask him if he had any suggestions or ideas or for my personal social media campaign to find my next opportunity.  Just then I got an email from Gowalla with the subject “Robert Scoble wants to be your friend”.

Strange coincidence?  I thought not.

I first accepted the request and then went to Scoble’s blog to read his latest entry – about how to augment your SXSW reality.  Lots of great tips – if you are going or not, I suggest you read it.

After that I sent him an email asking for his feedback – and promptly got an auto-responder message explaining that he gets so much email that he cannot respond to all of them.  I can understand this and relate, so I sent him a DM (direct message) on Twitter.  I’m still hoping to hear back from him – fingers are crossed.

Whether I hear back from Scoble or not, I’m going to continue to reach out to some of the biggest social media all-stars I know.  I’m fortunate to know a number of the shining stars and know that eventually I’ll get the lead I need for my next opportunity.

Chris Pirillo, who leads one of the largest social networks around – Geeks and is also a social media all-star in his own right, was kind enough to recommend me for a position as a community builder for PearlTrees (totally unsolicited).  That situation didn’t work out, as they are looking for someone to start out part-time and I wasn’t willing to relocate to Silicon Valley for a part-time position (although I will consider ALL full-time opportunities.  But I am still hopeful and know the right situation will come my way in the near future.

BTW – Scoble and Pirillo are two of the smartest, nicest and geekiest guys you’d ever meet – and very approachable, although very, very busy.

Do you have any suggestions of other social media stars who might be of assistance to me in my search?  I’d love to hear them.  Thank you!

Thank you for the tips Deba and Howard.

Howard – I met Chris at a Seattle Chamber event last September when he and Julien were in town to promote their book. I follow him on Twitter, but he has not accepted my FB or LinkedIn connection requests.

Did you meet @Terrinakamura and @2morrowKnight at the #140tc? There is so much happening with WA wine-I know there are some Wine/Social Media Superstars too. Seeing the synergy between Social Media and the Wine Industry in Washington State, I can’t help but think it would be good to look into experts in both niches. You are doing everything right (correctly ;-)
    IMO.
