Concur Technologies out in Redmond seems to have a number of open positions in the rapidly growing and changing field of social media. The latest role I have applied for at Concur is for a Social Media Manager position. It was posted on LinkedIn by Shelly Holt the Director of Global Recruiting at Concur Technologies (and I think she had tweeted about it too).
One of the things about the Concur application process is that once you apply by sending in your resume and cover letter, they send out an autoreply email with a link to an additional survey one must take to complete the application. It is short and sweet and doesn’t take much time, but I’m sure it helps narrow down the field of potential candidates. One of the questions is the salary range the applicant is targeting – I’m sure that weeds out a lot – both those who think they are worth way too much and those who don’t value their own worth.
When doing a google search on Shelly Holt, in hopes of finding a way I am connected to her, I was kind of surprised that her first social media account that came up was at JigSaw. When I saw that I joined Jigsaw right away and thought that you should too. Then I searched for people with my same name and 159 entries showed up – including business owners and the CEO of Pandora (Pandora is another great company I would LOVE to work for).
Shelly also showed up high in my google search with her Spoke account. I’m not sure that she’s actually claimed her account, but it shows that she has 757 co-workers at Concur. I had no idea Concur was such a large corporation! Spoke is another one of those networks that I’ve received a lot of invitations to, but never really pursued – until now. You can now find Joe “The Connector” Kennedy’s profile on Spoke.
Note: It required a company input, so I used “Joe Soc – Social Media Evangelists” – it is a company I’m going to start if I cannot find a community builder or social media evangelist position in the near future. I also used an old photo of me with short hair – I guess it’s alright to do that since my hair will finally be harvested for Locks of Love at the Mane Event on Main on April 21st – and I’ll finally get to have short hair again!
Through the use of Google, Jigsaw and Spoke, I was able to find Shelly’s email address at Concur, sent her an invitation to connect on LinkedIn and followed her on Twitter. I’m hoping she’ll be willing to connect. Who knows? Maybe she’ll even comment on this long rambling blog post?

Update: Shelly was kind enough to connect on LinkedIn!

Joe,
I’m also on the recruiting team at Concur – I handle the technology side. One thing I’ll add for your readers – it’s great that you take the time to follow our process while also working your network. It’s important to keep in mind that we recruiters rely on our systems to help us keep track of the huge number of contacts we make and stay in compliance with government regs. So before you go working every angle of your social network, taking the few minutes to follow the official process as well makes it much easier for us to work with you when we start getting all of the raving fan referrals from your social network.
Good luck in your search. Perhaps we’ll be working together at some point.
~DK Burnaby, Concur
Thank you DK! It was a pleasure talking to your wife on the phone today. Concur seems like a great company to work for.
I understand your point about learning recruiting processes at different companies, but I think that a lot of people just ‘spray and pray’ – sending out resumes for every job they see posted. I’ve definitely taken a different approach – and have only sent resumes with interest in a small number of targeted roles – most of them referred to me by someone I’m connected to on one or more social networks.
Shelly – it has been great to learn more about Concur.
I’m especially happy to see that Concur is jumping all-in with social media. Many companies are realizing how important social media has become to their marketing and communications efforts and taking the right steps to being fully engaged with their clients, potential customers, employees, partners and more.
